CHALLENGES TO DEMOCRACY IN TODAY’S EUROPE

The Summer University 2006: The beginning of a great venture...

For its first edition, the Summer University for Democracy of the Council of Europe’s Schools of Political Studies chose a highly relevant topic: Challenges to democracy in today’s Europe.

With some 500 participants from 15 countries, the meeting focused on discussing issues that are common to all European democracies. In spite of diverse practices and differing political and geopolitical contexts all countries face similar problems such as citizen participation, integration, security etc. The aim was to identify the various aspects of the European approach to these questions so as to highlight and develop a sense of European communality and consider common responses.

The need to talk about the crisis of democracy despite its apparent success across our continent over the previous twenty years, as highlighted by former Council of Europe Secretary General, Catherine Lalumière, encapsulates the theme of the first Summer University.

The 2006 Summer University was considered a success. And so why not reiterate it in the coming years and explore other aspects of European values?
