Belarus School explores potential lessons from transformations in countries of Visegrád 4 26/09/2013 The School’s second session this year from 7-10 September 2013 was hosted by the European Youth Centre in Budapest and focused on what lessons Belarus could learn from the economic, political and social changes that took place in the Visegrad 4 countries (Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic).

Numerous renowned speakers from the Central European University of Budapest participated at the seminar, such as Dr. Zsolt Enyedi, Associate Professor and Head of Department, who gave a lecture on the “Transformation of Political System in Hungary and V4 Countries” or Dr. Carsten Schneider, Director of the Center for the Study of Imperfections in Democracies who focused during his talk on current problems of European democracies.

The seminar also hosted former politicians such as Mr. Pavol Demes, Transatlantic Fellow of the German Marshall Fund of the USA and former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovakia who gave a lecture entitled “Slovak Society: From “Socialist Camp” to European Democracy”. Furthermore, a gender perspective was added to the debates through an interesting lecture concentrating on the subject of gender called “Belarus and European Standards of Equal Rights and Opportunities of Women and Men” given by Ms. Valentina Polevikova, Founder and Chairperson of the Belarusian Women’s Party “Nadzeya” (1994 – 2002) and Belarus School (EESPS) Manager.

Additionally, participants of the seminar were involved in special trainings aimed at developing their leadership competences. They learned about different concepts of leadership, leadership competencies, as well as the importance of public opinion.
